Tim Firth
27 Sep 10 to 02 Oct 10
Liverpool Empire Theatre

Starring Denise Black, Jean Boht, Jennifer Ellison, Julia Hills, Ruth Madoc, Elaine C Smith, Rachel Lumberg with Joe McGann as John and Bruno Langley as Lawrence the photographer.

A group of ordinary women do something extraordinary and spark a global phenomenon when they persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference.

...a show full of poignant moments... But it also offers plenty of humour... Joe McGann... puts in a nicely understated performance... Anne Charleston... brings a lot of comedy to what is really a supporting role... it is Rachel Lumberg as the put-upon people pleaser Ruth who truly steals the show... The first half... plods a bit... but the second half reveals more about the characters and their relationships.
Liverpool Daily Post
Less demure and more rough around the edges than [Helen] Mirren [in the film], [Elaine C] Smith is more convincing as Chris... it’s Rachel Lumberg who plays lovable Ruth who offers the most varied and powerful performance with sniffles and giggles aplenty... The highlight of the night is the photo shoot when each actress gets their kit off... has more substance than being simply a giggle and is filled with lovely moments of emotion.
Liverpool Echo (Rating: 8/10)
...the talented Julia Hills and... Elaine C Smith had a chemistry on stage that only two true friends can achieve... Rachel Lumberg gave an outstanding performance... Bruno Langley who played the roles of Lawrence and Liam (each totally different characters) really shone... The stage setting by Robert Jones was cleverly done... Roger Haines has directed this production with empathy and yet does not allow the subject of leukaemia to make it into a gloomy affair, instead we get an uplifting story...
The Public Reviews (Rating: 4/5)
All of the actors are on top form, but Rachel Lumberg (Ruth) is without doubt the highlight of the show... Anne Charleston... also delivers a star performance... The final thirty minutes of act one demonstrates how good a comic writer Tim Firth is... Parts of the show, however, feel weighty...
