Peter Pan - Musical Adventure

08 Dec 10 to 01 Jan 11
The Lowry

Based on J.M. Barrie’s beloved story that has enchanted children of all ages for nearly 100 years, the classic tale of a boy who never grows up is brought magically to life in this spectacular new production.

Stars Tom Little (Peter Beale in Eastenders) as Pan with Brian Capron (Richard Hillman in Coronation Street) as Hook and John Henshaw as Smee.

Interview: John Henshaw

The last time John Henshaw starred at the Lowry Theatre he was playing God, in the Jimmy McGovern musical King Cotton. This time, at their Christmas show, he’s playing Smee in Peter Pan, the ‘musical adventure’.
City Life

Thomas Law... his physicality, stage presence and playfulness is just perfect for the role... Tara Wells provides a stereotypically prim Wendy... Her ‘little girl’ high pitch, can, however, afford to be toned down at times... The actor who can do no wrong in this performance is Brian Capron, as Captain Hook... Director David Fleeshman must be given praise for his direction on such a large company... the majority of the music is something to be desired... enough to capture the imagination of children and adults alike...
What's On Stage (Rating: 4/5)
...the ideal Christmas treat for the whole family... this production is simplified but kept snappy and fast paced by director David Fleeshman... Thomas Law... has energy and stage presence in abundance but... gabbling his lines and it’s unfortunate that he can’t sing very well. Brian Capron... excels as Captain Hook... Julia Makarova is particularly worthy of praise for her aerial acrobatics... the star of this show is the thirteen piece orchestra under the expert direction of Robert Bannon... by far the best Christmas show the Lowry has staged in a long time...
The Public Reviews (Rating: 4/5)
...a special seasonal sparkle... is absent from Peter Pan...Brian Capron as a larger than life Captain Hook... knows just what to do to earn the hisses... fresh faced Thomas Law as Peter Pan and I also enjoyed John Henshaw as Hook’s right hand man... Although I did think this gifted comedy actor and panto debutant didn’t look entirely at home on press night... Julia Makarova performs some remarkable feats of agillity as Tiger Lily...
Sale and Altrincham Messenger (Rating: 3/5)
...this Peter Pan doesn’t completely fly... Thomas Law plays Peter Pan like an annoying adolescent. It means it’s genuinely easier to warm to Captain Hook... [John] Henshaw’s endearing performance... there’s actually a panto here waiting to burst free, but the constraints of the script mean it’s an oddly passive experience, not aided by forgettable songs...
The Stage
The set design by Scenic Properties is bright and colourful, and the way the Darlings' bedroom dissolves into the night sky looks wonderful... like a production that is still a week's rehearsal away from being a decent show... the chorus of pirates and Indians carry out Ian Meeson's fun choreography with a great deal of energy and commitment... Thomas Law... Sometimes he is great and at other times he doesn't quite convince... Tara Wells... falseness runs through the whole of her characterisation and her irritating voice... Brian Capron is fine as Captain Hook for most of the time... looked under-rehearsed and as though director David Fleeshman hadn't really taken control and brought everything together into a satisfying whole
